Gingivitis has progressed to the alveolar bone (jawbone). The main cause of periodontitis is bacterial plaque and can be treated mechanically.
However, genetic, environmental, and systematic factors can also contribute to the disease. Systemic factors include diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, epilepsy, Down syndrome, AIDS, and blood diseases. The first symptom of periodontal diseases, which are common in society, is bleeding gums. The gums are red, swollen and have a shiny surface. These symptoms are often accompanied by bad breath, itching, bleeding sensation in the gums, and sensitivity in the teeth. Periodontal diseases can affect people of all ages from childhood to old age with different severity. Most of the time, since the patient has no complaints such as pain, it can progress without symptoms. When the patient complains, intact, caries-free teeth are shaken and lost due to loss of supportive tissues.
Treatment Methods: The main aim of periodontal treatment is to keep unhealthy and seemingly unpromising teeth in the mouth. Different treatment methods are applied depending on the type and severity of the disease. These can be simply summarized as oral hygiene education, scaling, root surface smoothing, regenerative, reconstructive, and mucogingival operations. It is also within the scope of periodontal treatment to provide gingival aesthetics for individuals with a high smile line. The type and severity of the disease, the patient’s habits and cooperation with the physician, and the standard of oral hygiene directly affect treatment planning and success. Periodontal treatment is a dental service with the highest rate of patient satisfaction and definitive results when early diagnosis and necessary interventions are made. It should be kept in mind that no restorative treatment can be applied to teeth that are not periodontally healthy.
